Video archiving allows saving the footage according to the settings and analyse the fragments of interest for the user.
The archive is saved on the Server storage. Video is stored in the archive as one or more indexed files. To limit the size of the files, use the Video Subsystem tab in the Tweaki.exe utility.
The archive represents the storage for the video recordings that are made in Axxon PSIM software. Loop recording is used here. When the hardwares run out of the space allocated to archive storage, the rewriting of footprint starts. It is made on the principle of overwriting the earliest recordings.
Video archive is stored in the VIDEO folder on the selected system disk. Child directories with titles in «DD-MM-YY HH» (Date, Hour) format are stored in the VIDEO folder. Archive files for the current hour are here. Video file extension indicates the number of video camera that is used for video archive.
Important!
Axxon PSIM software creates and stores video archive in its own format. One can view the archive files without converting with the Video surveillance window, using the converter.exe utility or using the AxxonPlayer utility (if you chose the required period).
Video archive can also be exported to other formats. For that, the above instruments as well as the AviExport utility can be used. See also the Export and print out section.
The codec in which the archive is recorded is by default determined by the codec of the original video signal – see Video signal compression and decompression. It is also possible to record an archive in MPEG4 format regardless of the codec of the original video signal: for this, create and configure the MPEG4 Encoder object.
Video signal recording may be initialized by one of three methods:
- Forced recording by Operator command;
- Automatic recording upon alarm registration;
- Automatic recording upon a macro/script/program execution.
To make the analysis of the causes and effects of an alarm event more effective, Axxon PSIM software performs expanded schemes of video recording file. An example of a video recording expanded scheme is given in the figure below.
The scheme contains the following segments:
Pre-alarm event recorded before the recording start time on the camera alarm. Pre-alarm event recording option facilitates the analysis of event causes.
Attention!
For cameras without video compression that have been added to the corresponding list in the Video subsystem section in the tweaki.exe utility (see The Settings panel of the Video subsystem section), video is not recorded in Pre-alarm record mode.
- Post-alarm event recorded after the recording end time on camera alarm. Post-alarm event recording option facilitates the analysis of event consequences.
- Hot recording – video recording segment with higher frame rate. Increasing frame rate on the Hot recording segment makes event analysis more effective. The Hot recording segment always starts from the recording start time on the alarm event registration. The Hot recording segment is finished at the recording end time (depending on the Hot recording settings and event duration).
Further use of video recording segments is restricted by Axxon PSIM software. The list of restrictions is given in the table.

Note.
If the MPEG4 recording format is selected, a small fragment of the recording (about 0.5 seconds from the beginning) may be lost.
